Facts about KiwiSaver
- Government kick starts you with $1000
- 18 or over the government will pay into your account a member tax credit matching the contributions you have made that year up to a max of $1,042.86
- After 3 years you may become eligible to withdraw all or part of your savings to purchase your first home (excludes tax credits & kick start)
- Employees 18 and over are automatically enrolled when starting a new job
- Self employed are not automatically enrolled, but can join and get the kick start of $1000
- A new employee can opt out on the 14th day of employment to the 56th day of employment
- A employee can take a contribution holiday after being a member for 12 months
- Contribution holiday can be for a minimum of 3 months and a maximum of 5 years
- All employers have to offer KiwiSaver in the workplace
- KiwiSaver is considered part of matrimonial property
- From April 09 it is compulsory for employers to put in 2%
- The IRD has 6 Default Providers
